Explore the updated Quapaw Language Pronunciation Guide

The Quapaw Nation Language Department has released a helpful Updated Pronunciation Guide for anyone interested in learning the basics of the Quapaw language. Designed using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the guide introduces learners to essential phonemes—individual sounds—that make up the language.

Key features include:

  • Nasal Sounds, produced through the nose and mouth simultaneously

  • Aspirated Sounds, where a breathy “h” sound comes before or after consonants

  • Glottal Stops, short pauses in pronunciation similar to saying “uh-oh” in English

The guide also includes examples and English sound comparisons to help learners get started. Whether you’re reconnecting with your heritage or simply exploring Native languages, this tool offers a valuable starting point.
